Jochen Schaefer, MD

Dr. Jochen Schaefer is board certified in dermatopathology by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Pathology. He received his medical degree from Eberhard-Karls-University’s School of Medicine in Tübingen (Germany), after which he became an intern in General Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine and a third-year categorical resident in General Surgery. Dr. Schaefer completed his residency in anatomic pathology at the University of California San Francisco and spent his third-year residency and fellowship in dermatopathology and surgical pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Medical College of Cornell University at the Weill Cornell Medical College.

He continued his postdoctoral fellowship in dermatopathology and cancer immunology at the University of Virginia. After completing his fellowship in dermatopathology, he pursued his academic career as Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Dermatopathology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Tufts University.

Before joining Sagis, Dr. Schaefer participated as a co-investigator in NIH-funded clinical trials focused on improving immune-based therapies for patients with advanced melanoma. He authored numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. Dr. Schaefer is also a past chair of the mentorship committee of the American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP). He currently serves as the Dermatopathology Advisor for the International Foot and Ankle Foundation (IFAF).
